Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Championship Defense with Dramatic Overtime Triumph

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the decisive points deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the champions a positive start.

Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with a game-high 39 and also hit a career-high five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defensive work to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the game, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the chance to secure some early revenge on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

In other action, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to prevent his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
